I was with my best friend on an annual retreat we take when this song came out. As a big U2 fan, I was absorbing every song on their latest album. When this song came on, God used it to speak to me directly.
When a surfer goes out into the waves, they need to paddle past the breakers where the water is calm. Its there they wait and watch for the perfect wave to ride into the shore. This song is talking about someone who can’t get past the breakers, and they are stuck where the waves just keep pounding them over and over again.
Only this person isn’t stuck; they are choosing to be stuck. In love with defeat. Afraid to be swept off our feet. When are we going to stop chasing every breaking wave?
